The Simpsons Season 16 Blu-ray (Available December 3rd, 2013)

It’s a little shocking that The Simpsons is being released at a snail’s pace, considering rival shows like Family Guy and Futurama have stayed completely caught up with their current seasons. In fact, the majority of popular TV shows stay an expected and accepted one season behind for home video releases. Here we have Season 16 of The Simpsons – but that was 9 seasons ago!

Highlights of the set include the Treehouse of Horror XV, the international scope of Midnight Rx and Goo Goo Gai Pan, the legalization of gay marriage in Springfield in There’s Something About Marrying and Thank God It’s Doomsday, in which Homer tries to predict the end of the world. All 21 episodes are included on 3 Blu-ray discs, along with numerous featurettes – including “Greetings, Junior Scienteers!” a live Simpsons special, a Multi-Angle Animation Showcase, bonus episodes, and original sketches. Notably, the set also features audio commentary on every single episode, with a varying assortment of writers, actors, and directors. Deleted Scenes are also accompanied by commentary.

On the technical front, the Blu-ray discs are 50GB dual layer, with a 1.33:1 aspect ratio and English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. It’s also subtitled in Spanish and has a French Dolby Digital 5.1 language track. As with the previous sets, if you can find the 3D molded head packaging, it might be worth the visual appeal, though that version is only available on the DVD format.

White House Down (Available on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack, DVD and Digital on November 5, 2013)

From Roland Emmerich, director of Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and 2012, comes the hard-hitting, non-stop thrill ride White House Down, available on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack, DVD and Digital on Nov. 5 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Attempting to reconnect with his estranged 11-year-old daughter Emily (Joey King), Capitol policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) lets the young political enthusiast tag along with him to the White House for his job interview with Secret Service agent Carol Finnerty (Maggie Gyllenhaal). But when the building comes under attack by terrorists, John is cut off from his daughter, and in his efforts to reunite with her he interferes with former Secret Service leader Martin Walker’s (James Woods) sinister plot to kidnap President Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Now, Cale must attempt to not only rescue his daughter from the clutches of a madman, but also protect the President while fending off Walker’s heavily armed mercenaries.

Bonus Features include an exclusive gag reel, along with nine exclusive making-of featurettes, taking audiences behind the scenes to see what it took to bring the high-adrenaline adventure to the big screen (more details below).  Both the Blu-ray and DVD come with four additional behind-the-scenes featurettes chronicling the on- and off-screen chemistry between the dynamic leading duo, their willingness and desire to train for and perform their own stunts, a look at Emmerich’s vision for the film and how he was able to achieve it, along with a spotlight on the star-studded supporting cast.

RWBY Season One, Volume One (Available on DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital Platforms November 12, 2013)

RWBY is a new, visually stunning animated series from Rooster Teeth, directed by Monty Oum. The story focuses on a group of four girls in their first year at a legendary academy founded to train monster-slayers known as Huntsmen and Huntresses. A young hero, an exalted heiress, a troubled rogue, and a party girl… a team brought together and trained for the sole purpose of combating the rampant evils that plague the fantastic world of Remnant.

The animation is distinctive, which will either offput newcomers or please viewers ready for heavy stylization. The direction by Monty Oum brings back the eccentricities of his preoccupation with heavy-hitting action sequences, while the soundtrack resonates admirably. The story might contain the same generic material seen in the familiar monster-fighting and sorcery-training anime fare it resembles, but for a smaller budget and the initiation of a new project, it’s worth a look.

Bonus Features include Behind-the-Scenes Videos, Fan Art Highlights and Director Commentary (this track is quite educational if you can bring yourself to re-watch episodes with a voiceover).
