An entire police department, paramedic response team, and heavily armed S.W.A.T. unit face off with the iconic slasher in this action packed and explosive film full of stunts and jaw dropping gore effects that raise both the bar and the body count of the previous two films put together. Evil Dead (Available on Blu-ray and DVD with UltraViolet July 16)

DVD_evildead

Whether intentional or not, the original “The Evil Dead” contained ample amounts of humor mixed into the gore. 2013’s reimagining removes all trace of silliness and goes straight for the throat with a nonstop barrage of bloodthirsty havoc and creepy, possessed devil girls. Without the intrusive zooms and campy comedy to alleviate the tension, “Evil Dead” successfully presents a nearly uninterrupted 90 minutes of potent terror highlighted by perverse bodily harm to its protagonists from a varied assortment of cutting tools. Everything from knives and syringes to crowbars and the bathroom sink are used to inflict gruesome slayings to unsuspecting victims. The unrelenting pace combined with the ferocious nature of the violence is numbing, so if your cup of tea isn’t overflowing with blood, then look elsewhere. The inclusion of a backstory for the witchcraft and the snippets of character development that are offered before the characters are dissected (physically, not figuratively) aren’t involving enough to invoke much concern for their wellbeing.

In an attempt to help rid his sister Mia (Jane Levy) of her drug addiction, David (Shiloh Fernandez) takes her to their parents’ old cabin in the woods for some distraction-free healing. Accompanying them for support are their childhood friends Olivia (Jessica Lucas) and Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci), as well as David’s girlfriend Natalie (Elizabeth Blackmore). When the five young adults unwittingly conjure a demonic force of incredible power, the hellish spirit possesses Mia and a murderous rampage begins that quickly finds the number of unharmed souls diminishing.

Fernando Di Leo: The Italian Crime Collection Vol. 2 (Available on DVD and Blu-ray  July 30)

dvd_fernandodileo

Outstanding in bold, intricately plotted, ultra-violent stories about pimps and petty gangsters, director and writer Fernando Di Leo perfected the genre with an uncanny accuracy that prefigured the works of Quentin Tarantino and John Woo.

DISC 1 SHOOT FIRST, DIE LATER (1974, 95 min): Luc Merenda gives the performance of his career as a highly regarded police detective who is taking syndicate money in exchange for departmental favors. His father, a simple man, also works for the department but at a lower level; he isn’t jealous of his son, but rather proud of him, little knowing that he’s a crooked cop. A series of events leads the young detective to ask his father for a favor (he wants a certain police report that is desired by the syndicate) and it doesn’t take long for the detective’s father to realize his son is on the take, which leads to numerous complications. BONUS FEATURES: ”The Master of the Game” Documentary Featurette, ”The Second Round of the Game” Documentary Featurette, Original Theatrical Trailer

DISC 2 KIDNAP SYNDIACTE (1975, 98 min): Colella is a hard working but struggling mechanic who raises his son Fabrizio after his wife passed away. Fabrizio is friends with Antonio, son of the extremely rich but incredibly repugnant businessman Filippini. When criminals kidnap Antonio in front of school, the brave Fabrizio tries to prevent this and the nervous kidnappers pull him into the car as well. They demand a huge ransom for the boys, but the pigheaded Filippini refuses to give in to criminals and put the lives of the boys at stake, whilst Colella and even the police commissioner can’t do anything. Colella goes after them, but soon stumbles upon a very complex and well-protected network. BONUS FEATURES: ”Violent Cities” documentary / featurette, ”The other Fernando di Leo s Trilogy” (Citta violente: laltra trilogia di Fernando di Leo).

DISC 3 NAKED VIOLENCE (1969, 99 min): A devastating, brutal, raw example of Di Leo’s early works, Naked violence is about how a teacher of an evening school for youngsters with social problems is brutally raped and murdered right in her classroom. The only suspects are the kids and the police are surprised to find them all quietly in their homes instead of having escaped. There is a reason. Each kid declares that he did not participate in the brutality but was forced to watch. The police officer Lamberti has reasons to believe that someone, an adult, has orchestrated the kids whose name they are too afraid to mention.

BONUS FEATURES: ”Goodfellas” documentary / featurette, ”Fernando di Leo at the Cinematheque Francaise” featurette.

Set includes a fully illustrated booklet.

For some families, having a live-in shrink isn’t nearly enough. The Petunia family has a storied history of avoiding real feelings: Mom (Christine Lahti) is a therapist who needs a shrink of her own; dad (David Rasche) hides his problems under an oblivious and disaffected non-personality; and brothers Michael (Eddie Kaye Thomas) and Adrian (Jimmy Heck) are hiding infidelity and sex addiction, respectively. Throw in mean NYC princess Vivian (Thora Birch) for a sister-in-law, and you have Charlie s biggest problem: his crazy family. At first glance, Charlie looks positively Bond-like in his tuxedo but in fact, he is the polar opposite of the suave lady-killer. Instead of drinking martinis and living it up, Charlie spends his brother s wedding reception avoiding the dance floor and securing his self-imposed celibacy by snapping the rubber band on his wrist anytime he feels aroused by the formal-wear-clad young men in the room. Charlie finally finds a guy he s willing to break his no sex vow for when he meets and starts dating George McDougal (Michael Urie). But George is hiding something from Charlie his wife (Brittany Snow) and their relationship hits a complicated snag when she returns unexpectedly from a long trip…
