Top Ten Films of 2017
Once again, this year provided plenty of sequels, blockbusters, and special effects extravaganzas. It also provided a few oddities, some moving character studies, and a comedy or two that featured performances far superior to the subjects they were exploring. But many of the critical darlings and early awards contenders failed to make much of an impression on us. Widely praised (and, on a few occasions, wildly popular) pictures like “The Shape of Water,” “Dunkirk,” “The Florida Project,” “Logan,” and “The Post” were disappointing for us, while even some of the more entertaining projects (like “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Lady Bird”) weren’t astounding enough to end up in the running. As such, it was incredibly difficult to compile ten best films, putting us in that awkward spot of having only a couple of clear-cut favorites before having to fill up the remaining slots with amusing but hardly award-worthy productions. Perhaps we’re getting too critical – or maybe we’ve just seen too many films!
