n 1862, a security breach threatens an occult museum. When soldiers storm the building, they engage in an explosive battle with a werewolf, whose destructive exploits are aided by two fellow, supernatural entities (who appear to be old ladies). It’s then up to Abraham Lincoln to call in the amazing Screw-On Head (Paul Giamatti), an interchangeably-craniumed robotic crimefighter, to rescue the museum’s elderly professor from the conquering Emperor Zombie (David Hyde Pierce) and his right-hand-woman, Patience the Vampire (Molly Shannon), who plot to use a melon-sized jewel (obtained from an untranslatable scroll) for world domination.

“I’ll be needing a body for this.” Contending with ancient, forbidden knowledge and an alternate history kept from the masses – who wouldn’t know how to handle the truth – this Mike Mignola story contains an abundance of absurdities. Yet it can’t be denied that it also boasts some of the most outrageously creative, off-the-wall designs, brimming with humor and pervasive strangeness. From a homicidal manservant (Patton Oswalt as Mr. Groin); to a murderous, machine gun-toting monkey henchman; to a tentacled demigod residing in the parallel dimension of a turnip, the patriotic battle between good and evil has never been so spectacularly odd. It’s also hilariously sarcastic, action-packed, and highly unique; who would have predicted that a bodiless automaton could be such a rousing superhero? It’s a shame that this standalone, short, television animation didn’t become a full series.
